The story behind that picture: "Danish election night"

By: Thorsten Overgaard

After more than ten years of liberalism with a twist of extreme right, the left wing took over the power. An oh yes, we got the first female prime minister in the Kingdom of Denmark. I was covering the election night at the Danihs Parliament where the politicians would show up as the votes were being counted

One of the winners of this election, Margrethe Vestager arrives to the Danish Parliament on election night.

While the extreme right wing party, Dansk Folkeparti, for the first time ever lost votes, the far left wing party Enhedslisten tripled from 4 members of parliament to 12. In times where politics is more and more about personalities, the former communist party (and three other of the old left-wing parties who are now Enhedslisten, "The United List") has a true star in the 27 year old Johanne Schmidt-Nielsen.

You might not undestand the language, but you ge the picture. In the US one could call this a president candidate.

In two areas of Copenhagen she has circa 25% of the votes, the areas of the first-movers, artists and highest apartment prices - which also happens to be the most social unstable areas. It may be a sign of protest, the closes Denmark has ever gotten to a revolution.

Leader of the far right wing party, Pia Kjærsgaard arrives outside the Danish Parliament.

Has politics become entertainment?
If one try to google Johanne Schmidt-Nielsen, the search engine will sugges "nude" and "boyfriend" as the most popular search strings. Perhaps a true indication as to the actual level of democracy. Unlike Silvio Berluscini - to name one - she has never appeared nude in the media, and yes, she has a boyfriend.

Radikale doubled at this election. If you google their leader, Margrethe Vestager the request for "nude" appear only as the 9th place. "as prime minister" appear as number 4.

Another darling in the election is the leader of the Radikale, Margrethe Vestager, a center party little to the right that doubled in this election from 9 to 17 members of parliament. On Google, the request for her "nude" is only on the 9th place whereas the search for her "as prime minister" is number 4. For a mother of three daughters and not a candidate for prime minister ... not bad. It should be noted that the first female prime minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt also has a "nude" google rank as no 9 as well.

To be fair, the participation in this election was the highest in more than 20 years with 87.8% voting.

How we wote in Denmark: With pen and paper.

Though television cameras and photographers all about, this television presenter has the floor to her self as she waits at the main entreance for the arriving candidate.

Leader of the far right wing party Pia Kjærsgaard arrives.

Leader of the far right wing party that suffered a loss of three member of parliament (from 25 to 22), Pia Kjærsgaard. She apparently isn't being googled for "nude" but more often for wanting borders to Germany re-established.
